Didn’t like\u00a0the name before I visited,\u00a0didn’t like\u00a0the food when I visited.\u00a0 Then came the bill!, I certainly didn’t like that.<\/p>\n

Alfies<\/a> at the Bermondsey Square\u00a0Hotel<\/a> is not cheap, we went shortly after it opened\u00a0when they were doing an introductory 50% discount, even with the discount I felt completely ripped off.<\/p>\n

For starters I had\u00a0asparagus with egg (expecting a nice runny egg to dip the\u00a0asparagus in – got\u00a0a hard boiled egg and some horrid mushroom sauce).\u00a0\u00a0Then it just got\u00a0worse, more of the disgusting gravy with my next course, it wasn’t the mushroom sauce but something rather close in taste and consistency.<\/p>\n

We ordered a bottle of Chablis\u00a0for about \u00a326, and like the food it was decidedly inferior, basically I can only describe it as plonk.<\/p>\n

This place is\u00a0way below the standards of the other restaurants in the area.\u00a0 How\u00a0it can be described as “a significant addition to Bermondsey’s burgeoning foodie scene”\u00a0 or as “a place that champions fresh English dishes” is\u00a0a joke.\u00a0 I rather wonder if the people who wrote\u00a0this “advertising copy” actually\u00a0ate there!<\/p>\n

UPDATE December 2010 – Alfie’s now have a new chef;\u00a0 not sure I can bring myself to go back though.<\/p>\n

UPDATE January 2011 – In a few weeks time Masterchef Judge Gregg Wallace is opening a new restaurant in the Hotel, replacing Alfies, see Big Hospitality Artical<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n

UPDATE April 2012 – Have yet to read a positive review of the restaurant (Greggs Table).<\/p>\n

UPDATE September 2012 – The Hotel and restaurant are currently being used for the reality show Hotel GB <\/a>– have to say that the place seems to be more about PR than food.<\/p>\n
